- 00.30; Train runs into snowdrift and is at a standstill. (No one has been able to leave the train.)
- 0.37; Ratchett's bell rings. The conductor answers it. Ratchett says; "C'est rein. Je me suit trompé".
- about 1.15; Hildegard Schmidt sees a conductor come out of a compartment and go towards the dining-car. He doesn't answer the bell from Mrs Hubbard.
- about 1.17; Mrs Hubbard thinks there is a man in her compartment. She rings for the conductor, who locks the adjoining door. Her daughter stays till half past three.
- about 5.00 Mary Debenham hears moaning when she is on her way to the toilet. She tells the conductor, who finds Ratchett and fetches Dr Constantine.
- 07.00: Miss Swanson interrogates Ratchett shortly before he dies of too much blood loss.
- Dr Constantine believes Mr Ratchett was stabbed between midnight and two o'clock.
Clues
- Miss Swansson finds the following things in Ratchett's compartment: a fine handkerchief with the letter "H" embroidered on it; pipe cleaner and Mr Ratchett doesn't smoke the pipe.
- The button from a conductor's uniform is found in Mrs Hubbard's compartment.
- The conductor's uniform is found hidden in the toilet in the Calais coach.
- The murder weapon, the knife, is found in a beauty bag in Mrs Hubbard's compartment.
